Paul Grindlay, Conductor

Paul Grindlay has sung in choirs since he was nine years old, when he started with the choir of his local parish church in London, England. After moving to Canada and completing a zoology degree at UBC, he returned to choral singing with such notable ensembles as The Phoenix Chamber Choir, The Vancouver Cantata Singers, The Vancouver Chamber Choir and musica intima. He was a member of the 1990 National Youth Choir and the 1991 World Youth Choir. Paul maintains a solo vocal career, which has taken him to Austria, Japan, England, the USA and across Canada. Paul has studied and worked with many distinguished voice teachers, coaches and conductors, and has recorded CDs for NAXOS Records, Marquis and Toccata Classics. A man of broad musical tastes, Paul performs, conducts, teaches, writes and arranges music in many styles, plays the trombone, percussion and piano.

He holds bachelor degrees in Music (voice/opera) and in Zoology, both from the University of British Columbia. He has also studied at the Britten-Pears School (Suffolk, UK), Steans Institute (Chicago, USA), and the Banff School for the Arts (Alberta, Canada). He has participated in conducting courses offered by the Toronto Children’s Chorus (with Jean Ashworth Bartle and Henry Leck) and with the Vancouver Chamber Choir (Jon Washburn).

Paul was the Artistic Director of the Calgary Boys Choir ( from 2004 to 2007 and recently resumed that position in 2010. He has been an adjunct music professor at Rocky Mountain College ( and the conductor of Calgary’s “SuperSonic Men’s Choir” since 2007. He is co-director of music at Knox Presbyterian Church ( and Artistic Director of the Airdrie Community Choir ( He prepared the 2005 Alberta Children’s Honour Choir and the 2006 Alberta Men’s Choir (for Robert Sund), co-conducted the 2006 Alberta Boys’ Choir and directed the 2007 “Singspiration” youth choir at Concordia University. He is a founder member of “VoiceScapes” – a professional vocal collective - and “The Buzz” – a men’s a cappella quartet. Paul is in demand as a performer, voice teacher, repertoire coach, guest conductor, clinician and arranger. He serves on the board of directors for the Alberta Choral Federation and the Pro Arts Society.

Paul is featured on three recordings for the NAXOS label with the Aradia Baroque Ensemble: Purcell’s Tempest, Charpentier’s Noels and Christmas Motets, and Cantatas by Buxtehude. He has also recorded a Praetorius Christmas Vespers for Marquis and an all-Kapsberger disc for Toccata Classics.

In spare time, Paul is a passionate fly-fisherman, and leads guided fishing trips on the Bow River during the summer months. He also loves to spend time with his family and write poetry.
